Hoosiers Take Down Badgers, 4-3
April 9, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana (11-8, 1-5) women's tennis team used the home courts to its advantage on Saturday afternoon, as the Hoosiers were on the good side of a 4-3 decision over Wisconsin (11-8, 2-3).
It was shaky early for IU as Wisconsin took the No. 3 doubles match right out of the gate. Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel rebounded for the Hoosiers at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 victory. But the Badgers ended up taking the doubles point as Hanna Berner and Jessica Seyferth outlasted Evgeniya Vertesheva and Kayla Fujimoto in the No. 2 match, 9-7.
Indiana did not let the early deficit stand in its way as Vertesheva dominated her No. 2 singles match in straight sets with just dropping two games for the entire match, 6-2, 6-0. Hureau followed with much of the same playing No. 1, defeating Jenny Hois of Wisconsin, 6-0, 6-3.
Fujimoto gave IU its third point with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over UW's Seyferth at No. 5. Senior Charlotte Martin clinched the win for the home team Hoosiers with a convincing victory in the No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-1 over Berner.
"I was really proud of the team today," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "Losing the doubles point today was very disappointing and it would have been easy for us to get down early in singles play, but we did just the opposite. We jumped out early in three of the singles and got the momentum back, we won five first sets in singles and never looked back."
The Hoosiers will play at home again on Sunday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
