Hoosiers Topple Penn State, 6-1
April 10, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The #38 Indiana University women's tennis team (13-7, 5-2) increased their current winning streak to four matches on Friday, posting a 6-1 victory at Penn State (5-14, 2-5). Indiana swept the doubles competition and won five of six singles matches.
"Six of our first eight conference matches are on the road, so we knew we had to win on the road this year or our season would be over early," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "This was a good road win for us. Their indoor courts are very fast, so we had to make adjustments in our games and we were able to do that."
Maria Guerreiro and Katya Zapadalova set the tone early at No. 1 doubles with their quick 8-2 victory over Sarah Lotto and Monika Mical. Indiana's second doubles squad of Sigrid Fischer and Charlotte Martin weren't far behind, picking up an 8-3 win. Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey then completed the doubles sweep by taking their tiebreaker, 7-2.
"Our quick wins at No. 1 doubles and at No. 2 and No. 5 singles really helped turn the momentum in our favor," said Loring.
The Hoosiers jumped ahead 3-0 on the team scoreboard following singles wins by Martin and Sopel at second and sixth singles, respectively. Penn State was then able to secure the next team point by winning the No. 4 singles match.
Indiana snatched the final three singles matches, however, to secure the 6-1 triumph. The additional singles winners included Alba Berdala, Stuckey and Zapadalova. Berdala and Stuckey were straight-set winners while Zapadalova bounced back from a first-set defeat to earn her victory in three sets.
"Katya had a nice comeback win after being down 5-3 in the third set," said Loring.
