April 10, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana (12-8, 2-5) made it a perfect weekend with a 6-1 victory over Minnesota (5-13, 1-5) on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington. It was the first time this season the Hoosiers played outdoors at home.
IU dominated the doubles portion of the match only dropping five total games in the three matches. At No. 3, Sophie Garre and Katya Zapadalova picked up an 8-2 win. Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel cruised in the No. 1 match, 8-0, before Kayla Fujimoto and Evegeniya Vertesha were triumphant playing No. 2, 8-3.
In singles, Charlotte Martin started things for the Hoosiers with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 position. Vertesheva followed with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. Hureau gave up just three games in her match clinching triumph at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2.
To round out IU's final two points on the day, Sopel earned a victory in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 6 match and Fujimoto was a winner in the No. 5 position, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1).
"Besides the win, today was great because we got to play outdoors and in the wind," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "This was only our second outdoor match of the spring. We really needed a windy outdoor match and we got one. It was great to finally be home after five consecutive conference matches on the road. We played well this weekend and hopefully we can build on this."
Indiana will hit the road for just one match next weekend as it travels to Northwestern to battle the Wildcats on Saturday, April 16. That match will begin at 12 p.m. ET in Evantson, Ill.
