IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 34 Indiana University women's tennis team (13-6, 3-3) nearly notched its second win over a top-25 opponent this season, coming up just short of knocking off No. 22 Iowa (14-4, 4-3) on the road, 4-3.

Indiana struck first in doubles action by posting an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Myriam Sopel and Evgeniya Vertesheva combined to take down Iowa's Kelcie Klockenga and Jessica Young in the third slot.

A Hawkeye win at No. 2 doubles then forced all the pressure to the top spot where Leslie Hureau and Lindsey Stuckey held a 6-4 edge over the 15th-ranked doubles tandem in the country, Sonja Molnar and Merel Beelen. The Iowa duo reaffirmed their high nationally ranking, however, and ripped off four straight games to earn not only the 8-4 victory, but also the pivotal team doubles point.

Iowa was hot early on in singles play as well, running their team lead to 3-0 with a pair of straight-set victories before the Cream and Crimson began the comeback. Vertesheva got things going for IU, topping Lynne Poggensee-Wei by a 6-4, 7-5 tally to put the Hoosiers on the board.

The rally continued as the final three singles contests each went into a third set. Charlotte Martin and Katya Zapadalova both battled back from first set losses to win three-setters. Iowa's Jessica Young was able to snag her third and final set as well though, earning her Hawkeyes the decisive fourth team point.

Martin stormed back from a 6-2 opening-set defeat and posted set victories of 6-4 and 6-0. Meanwhile, Zapadalova lost just five games in her final two sets combined (5-7, 6-3, 6-2).

Looking forward, the Hoosiers will wrap up the home portion of the 2009-10 season next weekend when they host Penn State (Sat., Apr. 17) and No. 30 Ohio State (Sun., Apr. 18). Both matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. starts and live match results will be available right here at IUHoosiers.com.
