Hoosiers Top Illinois, 4-3
April 12, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The #29 Indiana University women's tennis team (17-5, 6-1 Big Ten) earned a 4-3 win over #58 Illinois on Saturday, the third tight Big Ten match the Hoosiers have won by that score this season.
"We came out and played tight today," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "But you have to give credit to Illinois, they played well today. It's a win and we need to get ready for tomorrow."
The visiting Fighting Illini came out firing in doubles play, winning two of the three contests to earn the team point. Following a loss in the second doubles match, IU's Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel evened things up by winning a tiebreaker for the 9-8 victory at No. 3. Number one doubles then went in favor of Illinois, 9-7.
Singles competition began with a familiar sight for Hoosier fans as senior captain Brianna Williams was the first to walk off the courts with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Momei Qu in the sixth flight. Charlotte Martin was not far behind her teammate, rolling to a 6-3, 6-3 decision in the No. 3 singles match.
Katya Zapadlova came up big in her match, riding a first-set tiebreaker to a 7-6, 6-2 win over Leigh Finnegan in the second singles match. Indiana's 3-1 lead was quickly erased, however, dropping the first and fifth singles contests.
It all came down to Sigrid Fischer and her third set versus Shivani Dave. Fischer jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Dave fired back to tie it at 3-3. The three-game streaks continued though as Fischer took the final three games for the 6-3 winner.
"Katya and Sigrid were the heroes today," said Loring. "They both played well and came up with clutch wins."
The Cream and Crimson conclude their 2008 home schedule with an 11 a.m. match on Sunday against arch-rival Purdue.
"We are looking forward to tomorrow's match," said Loring. "The rivalry, and Senior Day are great. We really hope the fans come out tomorrow and support Bri."
