April 13, 2014
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 41 Indiana earned a bounce-back win on Sunday over Penn State on the road, 6-1. The Hoosiers will conclude the Big Ten women's tennis regular season with pair of matches next weekend at home.
Indiana earned the doubles point right off the bat sweeping all three matches as Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek won at No. 1, Kayla Fujimoto and Alecia Kauss were victorious at No. 3 and Sophie Garre and Shannon Murdy came out on top in the No. 2 match.
The Hoosiers would then go on to win five singles matches, four in straight sets and one by retirement. Paula Gutierrez took the first set at No. 5 over Katherine Whiteaway of Penn State before Whiteaway retired from the match.
"This was an important win for our team," head coach Lin Loring said. "It gives us a split for the weekend and also gives us a winning conference record going into the final weekend before the Big Ten Tournament. Winning all the first sets was really huge. We were able to keep the momentum from the doubles and carry it into the singles."
The Hoosiers will return home for the final home matches of the year next weekend beginning on Saturday, April 19 vs. Michigan at 11 a.m. ET.
