Indiana Falls Short to No. 15 Northwestern
April 16, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers were topped by No. 15 Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Evanston, 6-1. The Wildcats remained perfect in Big Ten play as IU's two-match win streak was snapped. Evgeniya Vertesheva was the highlight of the day for the Hoosiers winning her fourth-consecutive singles match.
In doubles, NU earned the first win of the day at No. 1, but Kayla Fujimoto and Vertesheva rebounded at No. 2 with an 8-4 victory. However, it was Northwestern who would take the doubles point with an 8-6 triumph in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles, No. 114 Vertesheva earned her sixth Big Ten singles win of the year over No. 65 Belinda Niu and her fourth straight, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, playing at No. 2. The win marks Veresheva's third win this season over a ranked opponent. NU was victorious in the remaining singles matches.
