Hoosiers Send Away Penn State With 6-1 Victory
April 17, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 38 Indiana University women's tennis team started off "Senior Weekend" the right way, bulldozing Penn State (4-15, 0-7) in a 6-1 victory. The Hoosiers improved to 14-6 overall and 4-3 in conference matches.
Indiana duos of Leslie Hureau/Myriam Sopel and Charlotte Martin/Katya Zapadalova secured the doubles point for IU quickly, each taking their contests by 8-4 tallies. Lindsey Stuckey and Evgeniya Vertesheva, the 68th-ranked doubles tandem in the country, were paired up once again after several matches playing doubles with other teammates. They were reunited and felt so good after winning a tiebreaker, 7-3, to complete the Hoosier doubles sweep.
It was much of the same in single play as Indiana took five of six first sets. It kept coming in the second sets as well with the Hoosiers winning all six of those.
Stuckey was the first to walk off the courts following a 6-4, 6-2 besting of Sarah Henderson. Hureau quickly followed after finishing off her 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Lauren McCarthy at No. 2 singles. The team victory was then clinched when Zapalova over came a 3-0 deficit in the opening set to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and push the Hoosiers ahead 4-0.
Additionally, Martin and Vertesheva also picked up wins on Saturday. They each improve to 5-2 in Big Ten action while Vertesheva notched her team-leading 24th singles win of the season.
The Hoosiers will play their final home match of the 2009-10 season Sunday at 11 a.m. It will mark the final time in front of the home crowd for seniors Lindsey Stuckey and Maria Guerreiro. Live match results will be available for Sunday's match against No. 32 Ohio State.
