Seniors Go Out With a Win
April 19, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana ended the 2009 regular season with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Michigan State Spartans on Sunday. With the win, IU completes the regular season with a 14-9 record overall and 6-4 in the conference.
"I'm really pleased for our seniors that we could end their careers with a win," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "For four years, their Big Ten regular season record is 30-10. That's a seventy-five percent winning percentage in the conference. Plus they have played in the NCAA Tournament every year. That's a four-year record that any IU athlete in any sport would be proud of."
The day began with the Hoosiers sweeping the doubles action. First to complete were Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey with their 8-3 winner at No. 3 doubles. Indiana's second doubles team of Sigrid Fischer and Charlotte Martin also won easily, posting an 8-4 win. Maria Guerreiro and Katya Zapadalova then completed the sweep by taking a tiebreaker to earn an 8-7 triumph.
Senior Alba Berdala, playing her final match in front of the IU faithful, put the Hoosiers up 2-0 by giving up just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Michigan State's Elena Ivanova at third singles.
Following a win for the Spartans at No. 1 singles, Martin and Sopel each tallied straight-set wins for Indiana to clinch the team victory. Martin was a 7-6, 6-3 winner while Sopel downed Lindsey Lonergan, 6-3, 6-1.
The final two matches stretched into a third set. Fischer started her final set before the team outcome was determined, therefore, she played out a full-length set. It didn't take too long for her, however, as she blanked Dana Guentert, 6-0, to bag her 15th singles win of the spring.
Stuckey took the scenic route in her match, playing three straight tiebreakers. She split the first two tiebreakers before dropping a 10-point super tiebreaker in the third frame, 10-8.
