Michigan Sweeps Hoosiers in Season Finale
April 20, 2008
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The #29 Indiana University women's tennis team finished the regular season slate on Sunday, falling at #23 Michigan, 7-0. The Hoosiers finish the year 19-6 overall and 8-2 in Big Ten competition.
IU's 8-2 conference mark earned them the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which starts on Thursday, April 24 in West Lafayette, Ind. The Hoosiers will not see action until Friday, however, as they received a first-round bye and will take on the winner of the No. 6 Michigan State versus No. 11 Wisconsin opening round. The second round match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. eastern time on Friday.
The doubles team of Brianna Williams and Katya Zapadalova battled the 44th-ranked team in the country, Tania Mahtani/Chisako Sugiyama, before falling just short at 9-7. In singles play, Lindsey Stuckey nearly garnered a "W" for the Hoosiers. The North Carolina native seized a first-set tiebreaker, but could not do the same in the third-set tiebreaker, losing a tight match to Michigan's Rika Tatsuno, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-0 (7-4).
"We just lost to a better team today," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Nobody's played that well against us all year. We had a much closer match with the number one team in the country, Northwestern. Michigan played very well and we didn't match up with them at all."
Indiana may get the chance to see the Wolverines again in the Big Tens. If both teams are able to win their second-round contests, they would match up in the semifinals.
