April 21, 2013
EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 34 Indiana came up short on the road on Sunday against No. 16 Northwestern, 6-1, to end the regular season.
The Wildcats (15-8, 9-2) came out swinging as Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning of NU topped IU's Jithmie Jayawickrema and Leslie Hureau in the No. 2 doubles match, 8-3. In the No. 1 match, Indiana's (17-8, 6-5) Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy fell just short to 18th-ranked Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton of Northwestern, 8-5. Those wins gave the Wildcats the doubles point to start.
Northwestern added two more team points with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 before Hureau put the Hoosiers on the board in the No. 1 match. Hureau, ranked 119th nationally, cruised to a win over 122nd-ranked Corning of Northwestern in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Hureau's win would be the last point earned for the Hoosiers as the match was then clinched on the next finished court at No. 5 as NU's Brittany Wowchuk took down IU's Jayawickrema, 7-5, 6-1.
