BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis team (14-10) was eliminated from the Big Ten Championship Friday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Ohio State Buckeyes (15-9) in the quarterfinals.

Indiana opened the day by winning two of three doubles contests and securing the doubles point for the 1-0 lead on the team scoreboard. The drama level was high on the doubles court after the teams split first and second doubles, setting up a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to decide who took the first team point of the match. Sigrid Fischer and Charlotte Martin posted an 8-6 win over Julie Blackmore and Cami Hubbs at No. 2 doubles.

In the pivotal third doubles showdown, Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey prevailed, 7-3, in the tiebreaker to win 9-8 and give the Cream and Crimson a 1-0 lead.

"The doubles was about as exciting as it gets," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Considering they killed us in doubles two weeks ago, our team did a really great job of winning the doubles point."

The Buckeyes responded by winning the first four completed singles matches and sealed the 4-1 victory, sending them into the semifinals. The Hoosiers were on the brink of several comebacks, however, especially in the pair of unfinished matches.

At No. 4 singles, Fischer was leading her second-set tiebreak, 4-3, when play was halted and Sopel had just completed a 6-4 second-set win to force a third frame in her match-up at sixth singles.

"It was really windy for the singles, which we thought should help us," said Coach Loring. "They really overpowered us indoors two weeks ago, so we definitely wanted to play them outdoors in a little wind. And early on I think it did help us, we had a lot of matches at 3-3 and 4-4 when we were 45 minutes into the singles.

"But I give Ohio State a lot of credit. They made some good adjustments and used their physical strength to their advantage because the wind had gotten pretty bad by that time. We started making some good comebacks, but we just ran out of time."
