Loring's Hoosiers Move On To Big Ten Semifinals
The #3-seeded Indiana University women's tennis team notched a 4-0 sweep over Wisconsin, the number 11 seed, advancing to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. The IU win sets up a rematch of the regular season finale on Saturday versus Michigan.
"It's tough sometimes to beat a team twice in one season, but we did that today" said Head Coach Lin Loring. "I am pleased with our performance today. Katya (Zapadalova) won the deciding match and did a great job. She was down 6-4, 3-0 before turning the match around and clinching it for us."
Indiana began the day by taking the first and second doubles matches, and were leading in third doubles when play was halted in order to begin singles play. Brianna Williams and Katya Zapadalova tallied an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, topping Wisconsin's Elizabeth Carpenter and Chelsea Nusslock. The Hoosiers No. 2 doubles squad, Alba Berdala and Lindsey Stuckey, also earned a victory, winning 8-5. Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel led 7-4 at the time of stoppage.
Strong winds forced the singles action indoors where only three courts were available early on for each quarterfinal match. Three singles matches is all it would take for IU to clinch the team win, however, coming out on top in each of them.
Williams was flawless in her singles match, posting a 6-0, 6-0 final score over Erin Jobe. Next to finish for IU was Fischer, putting together a 6-4, 7-5 winner at fourth singles.
Zapadalova dropped her opening set in the second singles showdown versus Jessica Seyferth. Seyferth then pulled ahead 3-0 in the second stanza before Zapadalova started hitting on all cylinders. She battled back to end Wisconsin's season by winning that set 7-5 and the final frame, 6-1.
Berdala and Stuckey each won their first sets and were leading in the second when Zapadalova clinched and play was halted. Martin was deadlocked in a 5-5 first set versus Katya Mirnova.
As mentioned above, the Cream and Crimson are now set for a semifinal match-up with second-seeded Michigan. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. eastern time and live match updates will be available via the women's tennis schedule page.
"We didn't play that well at their place (in the regular season)," said Coach Loring. "We are excited to get another shot at them. The big thing is winning today because it keeps are record clean as far as the NCAA selection process. However, we need to be more competitive against Michigan tomorrow, we simply weren't very competitive the last time."
