    Indiana Tops Penn State to Move on to Big Ten Quarterfinals

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 7 seed Indiana (14-10, 4-7) was triumphant over 10th-seeded Penn State (6-16, 2-9) on Thursday afternoon, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2011 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament. It is the second time in four days IU had topped the Nittany Lions.

    Indiana earned two wins to clinch the doubles point as Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva won the No. 2 match, 8-4. Sophie Garre and Diana Kyllmann followed with a No. 3 victory, 8-3. The No. 1 match was abandoned at that time.

    In singles, Myriam Sopel kept things moving for IU with a dominating performance in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-1. Fujimoto was much of the same at No. 5 with a straight set win, 6-2, 6-2. No. 114 Vertesheva clinched it for the Hoosiers in the No. 2 position as she defeated Amy Simidian, 7-5, 6-2 to end the match.

    Indiana will move on to face the No. 2 seed in Northwestern on Friday. That match will begin at 2 p.m. ET in Ann Arbor.
