Vanderbilt Eliminates IU From NCAA Tournament
May 14, 2010
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 2010 season has come to an end for the IU Women's Tennis team, falling, 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 28 Vanderbilt (14-9). It marked the 27th time in 33 seasons in which Head Coach Lin Loring's team has advanced to the NCAA Tourney.
Indiana concludes the season with a 15-10 overall record and national ranking of No. 41.
With the top doubles match going quickly in favor of the Commodores, Indiana needed to take the remaining two contests for the doubles point. They nearly did so, winning No. 3 doubles and owning a 5-3 lead at second doubles before Vanderbilt battled back for the 9-7 double point-clinching victory.
Meanwhile Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel were in a dog fight two courts away in the No. 2 doubles battle. After watching Vanderbilt climb out of a 5-3 hole by ripping off four straight games, the Hoosiers had a response of their own with back-to-back games to even the score at 7-7. The Commodores notched the final two games, however, putting the first team point up on the scoreboard.
Zapadalova won her opening singles set, 6-2, over #86 Chelsea Preeg and Hureau was leading her second stanza at No. 2 singles before their matches were halted after three straight-set Vanderbilt victories gave them the 4-0 win.
