Sept. 22, 2007
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Indiana University women's tennis team placed five individuals and two doubles teams into flight finals at the Deacon Classic, hosted by Wake Forest. Senior Brianna Williams, Sophomores Lindsey Stuckey and Erin Clark and Freshmen Maria Guerreiro and Kate Zapadalova each advanced in the singles flights. The doubles team of Williams and Zapadalova and tandem of Clark and Guerreiro also reached the flight finals in doubles.
"I am pleased we've got a finals team in each flight of the doubles," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Two of those doubles finalists are freshmen, a great start for them."
"With Indiana being represented in the finals in four of the seven singles flights, we are pleased," said Loring. "Especially with it being our first tournament of the season."
Williams/Zapadalova will play in the flight one finals after winning a pair of matches on day two while Clark/Guerreiro are set for the flight two doubles championship. Juniors Alba Berdala and Sigrid Fischer recorded a second round doubles win as well before falling in the semifinals.
"This has been a really good learning experience for both the players and the coaches," said Loring. "The team is getting to learn a lot and we as coaches are getting to learn about the team."
Clark, Guerreiro, Williams and Zapadalova are each 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
"The freshmen have done extremely well," said Loring. "We've accomplished what we wanted in coming here, the high win total is a nice bonus."
