It was four up and four down for the IU women's tennis team on the final day of the 2008 Hoosier Classic as the Hoosiers split their singles matches.

Sigrid Fischer and Lindsey Stuckey each won during the 9:30 session while Stephanie Heller and Myriam Sopel earned victories in last session at 11 a.m. Fischer was in front of Kansas State's Katka Kudlackova, 6-4, 4-1, when Kudlackova was forced to retire due to injury. Stuckey disposed of Elna de Villiers (Michigan State) in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7(5), 1-0 (10-7).

In the later session, Heller and Sopel both cruised to straight-set victories. Heller took out Natasha Vieira from Kansas State while Sopel topped Indiana State's Valeriia Petrovych.

"Our goal this weekend was to see improvement from our last tournament down in Georgia a few weeks ago, and I thought we did," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Our doubles return of serves was better, down at our opponents' feet. In singles, I thought our slice backhands were improved and our serving was a little better this week."

    DAY TWO RECAP

Alba Berdala and Maria Guerreiro tallied two more doubles victories on Saturday en route to claiming the 'Cream' Doubles Flight. Four different Hoosiers also won their singles matches on the second day of competition.

Berdala and Guerreiro began the day by defeating Kansas State's Vanessa Cottin and Mariya Sulpska in a tie-breaker, 7-5. The IU tandem then took out Hannah Blatt and Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt, 8-2, to grab the flight championship.

Every other IU doubles team won at least one match on Saturday. Stephanie Heller and Charlotte Martin teamed up for an 8-1 win over a duo from arch-rival Purdue. In the 'Crimson' doubles flight, Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey's second round win gave them a shot at a flight title before suffering an 8-6 defeat in the finals. Sigrid Fischer and Katya Zapadalova went 1-1 on the day.

In singles action, five of eight Hoosiers came out on top. Heller, Guerreiro and Zapadalova each went into a third set where they all claimed victories in the 10-point tiebreakers. Fischer outlasted Mississippi State's Elna de Villiers, 13-11, in her third set. Winning in straight sets were Charlotte Martin (6-3, 6-3) and Stephanie Heller (6-2, 6-2).

The event comes to a conclusion on Sunday with competition scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

    DAY ONE RECAP
Day one of the 2008 Hoosier Classis is in the books and Indiana nabbed three singles and three doubles wins on the day. Each IU doubles tandem competing in the doubles flights advanced to the second round with victories on Friday.

Maria Guerreiro, Charlotte Martin and Lindsey Stuckey each won their singles contest. Stuckey began her day with a 6-1, 6-1 showing over Kansas State's Katka Kudlackova. Martin followed with a 6-3, 6-1 besting of Martina Banikova of Mississippi State. It was then Guerreiro's turn in the last session of singles matches as she also took out an MSU Bulldog, Valeriya Makarycheva, by the score of 6-3, 6-3.

Guerreiro and Stuckey added doubles wins later in the day as well. Guerreiro teamed with Alba Berdala in one of the most exciting doubles matches of the day, squeezing by Sarah Meghoufel and Valeriia Petrovych (Indiana State) and winning the tie-breaker, 9-8. Stuckey played with Myriam Sopel, doubling up a Vanderbilt duo, 8-4. Joining Stuckey and Sopel in the second round of the Crimson Doubles Flight are Sigrid Fischer and Katya Zapadalova after they posted an 8-6 triumph.
