Indiana Has Strong Showing at Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis team had a strong showing against tough competition on the first day of the Hoosier Classic.
"We played some very competitive matches today against some very good players,' head coach Lin Loring said. "There was improvement over two weeks ago, and we need more improvement tomorrow."
Sophomore Stephanie Heller was one of two Hoosiers to have two wins on the day, defeating Angela McGahee of Murray State 6-4, 6-1 to start the day, then overcoming Tiffany Tucker of LSU, 6-1, 6-1. Heller will play Georgia's Adrienne Elsberry tomorrow in the final of flight `C.'
Freshman Erin Clark won two games in round robin play. She beat Natasha Vieira 6-2, 6-4, then won 6-2,6-4 over Anne Pennington of Murray State. Clark will play Lyndsey Bochenek of Murray State on Saturday.
In flight `A,' senior Laura McGaffigan fell to Anna Lask of Murray State in three sets, 1-6, 7-6 (7), 1-0 (7). She also took her second opponent to three sets before dropping a tough match to Renee Joseph of Mississippi State 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (5).
Junior Brianna Williams fell to Viviana Yrureta of Kansas State, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4), before also dropping a match in three sets to Elizaveta Avdeeva of Kansas, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8).
Flight `B' saw sophomore Sigrid Fischer drop two matches on the day, beginning with Darya Ivanov of Georgia, 6-1, 6-3. She also fell to Anastasiya Dubova of LSU, 6-3, 7-5. Fischer will play Rachael Lask of Murray State on Saturday.
Senior Cecile Perton defeated Rachael Lask of Murray State, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Kunigunda Dorn of Kansas, 6-3, 6-4. Perton will play Katie Potts of Notre Dame tomorrow.
Freshman Lindsey Stuckey earned a hard-fought win over Katerina Kudlackousa of Kansas State 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (14) in her first game in flight `C' before losing 6-3, 6-3 to Cosmina Ciobanu of Notre Dame. Stuckey begins day two with Edina Horvath of Kansas.
Flight `D' saw sophomore Alba Berdala win over DeAndra Saddler of Mississippi, 7-6, 3-0 before Saddler retired. Berdala then fell to Elsberry of Georgia, 6-3, 6-0.
Doubles action begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. The duo of McGaffigan and Williams take on Mississippi State's Tatiana Feit and Renee Joseph in the first round, with Berdala and Clark playing Darya Ivanov and Naoko Ueshima. Fischer and Perton will play Rachael and Anna Lask of Murray State, while Marah Calvo and Stuckey play LSU's Ashley Murdock and Tiffany Tucker.
