Hoosiers Win Three Flights at UNF Fall Invitational
Oct. 11, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Leslie Hureau and Evgeniya Vertesheva, the two newest members of the Indiana Univeristy women's tennis team, each concluded their weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., at the UNF Fall Invitational with flight titles. Hureau won both her singles and doubles flight.
"As a team we had very mixed results, but individually several of the players really stood out," said Head Coach Lin Loring.
Vertesheva defeated Coastal Carolina's Michaela Bunea, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Singles A Draw finals where she was scheduled to face her teammate Hureau. Hureau put herself in the championship match by topping Alexis Rodriguez of Central Florida, 6-2, 6-0 in her semifinal contest. Vertesheva and Hureau shared the flight co-championship.
"Evgeinya and Leslie had great singles performances reaching the finals of the A Flight singles," said Loring. "By that time we had had three days of 90-degree tennis, so we didn't have them play each other."
Hureau remains undefeated as a Hoosier, also claiming the doubles title with Myriam Sopel as her partner. That doubles tandem has yet to suffer a defeat during the 2009-10 season, including their 8-0 blanking of Troy's Kelly Irving and Lauren Sampson in the flight title match.
"Leslie and Myriam played a great match in winning the A Flight doubles title, 8-0," said Loring.
Next up for the Hoosiers is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional, played in Cincinnati, Ohio, from Oct. 22-26.
DAY TWO RECAP
Three Hoosiers have advanced the semifinals of the large singles flights at the UNF Fall Invitational, two reaching the semis in the A Draw and one in the B Draw. Indiana is represented in the Doubles A Draw finals as well with Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel winning their first three matches of the weekend.
The two newest Hoosiers, Hureau and Evgeniya Vertesheva continued to make an instant impact in their second weekend donning the Cream and Crimson, each moving themselves into the semifinals of the Singles A Draw. On the flip side, Indiana's longest-tenured player and lone senior Lindsey Stuckey has completed the same feat in the Singles B Draw.
Each singles semifinals contest is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Sunday morning with the finals to follow at approximately 11:30 a.m.
As previously mentioned, the IU doubles tandem of Hureau and Sopel have an opportunity to not only take home the doubles flight title but also improve to an undefeated 7-0 on the season. They will face Troy's Kelly Irving and Lauren Simpson for the flight championship on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
The UNF Fall Invitational comes to a conclusion on Sunday. Check back at IUHoosiers.com Sunday for final results.
DAY ONE RECAP
Rain showers hampered the opening progress of the UNF Fall Invitational on Friday. In the limited playing schedule, Indiana won three of four singles matches and came out 2-1 on the doubles court.
Following a first-round bye, freshman Leslie Hureau remained undefeated in her young Hoosier career and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singles A Draw with her 6-3, 6-2 besting of Samford's Andrie Meiring. Hureau also teamed with Myriam Sopel for an 8-2 doubles victory, which catapulted them into the quarterfinals of the Doubles A Draw. Hureau is now 4-0 in both singles and doubles on the season.
Evgeniya Vertesheva was also a straight-set winner in her first match of the weekend, defeating Ali Beavers (Georgia Southern) quickly, 6-2, 6-0. Lindsey Stuckey notched a third singles win for the Cream and Crimson, posting a 6-2, 6-4 triumph.
Both Hoosier duos in the Doubles A Draw moved onto the quarterfinals on Friday. Stuckey and Katya Zapadalova notched an 8-6 win while Hureau and Sopel's winning tally came at 8-2 as mentioned above.
Maria Guerreiro and Matter are partnered up in the Double B Draw, but did not compete on Friday due to the delays.
