Hoosiers Complete Weekend Play at Vanderbilt

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis team concluded play at the June Stewart Invitational on Sunday. They added three singles wins and a pair of doubles victories to their weekend total.
"We saw some improvement this weekend," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "We played the majority of our matches against the best two teams in the tournament. The competition level was really good, which is what we wanted to get out of this tournament."
Alba Berala and Maria Guerreiro won three of four doubles matches over the weekend, topping Middle Tennessee State's Anna Djananova and Marlene Chemin, 8-3, on Sunday. The IU tandem of Sigrid Fischer and Katya Zapadalova also earned a doubles win Sunday, downing Catherine Newman and Heather Steinbauer of Vanderbilt, 8-2.
Four different Hoosiers won two of three singles contests down in Nashville, Tenn. Stephanie Heller, Charlotte Martin and Zapadalova each grabbed their second win on Sunday with straight-set victories while Sopel won her first two matches earlier in the event to advance to her flight championship match.
The Cream and Crimson are done traveling for the fall season with a lone home tournament remaining on the schedule. The Hoosiers will host the Indiana Invitational from Nov. 7-9.
DAY TWO RECAP
Indiana women's tennis continued play in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday at the June Stewart Invitational. Myriam Sopel highlighted the day by advancing to the the finals of her singles flight. In addtion, Alba Berdala and Maria Guerreiro made two tallies in the win column as doubles partners on day two of the event.
Sopel out-lasted Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson in a three-setter, winning 6-0, 2-6, 6-5 to advance to the flight championship. She wil face Katie Kargl of William & Mary in the title match on Sunday. Sigrid Fischer and Lindsey Stuckey were also winners on the singles court. Both earned straight-set victories.
In doubles action, Berdala and Guerreiro led the way with a pair of victories. They began the day by defeating Vanderbilt's Heather Steinbauer and Courtney Ulery by a score of 8-6 before topping a duo from Middle Tennessee State, 8-2, in the second batch of doubles match-ups.

DAY ONE RECAP
The Indiana University women's tennis team performed well during the first day of competition at the June Stewart Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt University. The Hoosiers won three of four doubles contests and went 5-3 in singles competition.
The day began with doubles action. Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey had the quickest match, taking out Middle Tennessee State's Natalie Araya and Taylor Coffey by a score of 8-3. Stephanie Heller and Charlotte Martin were also victors for IU, posting an 8-6 triumph over Belisa De Brtio and Sara Leavy from Tennessee-Martin. It took a tie-breaker to decide the outcome for Sigrid Fischer and Katya Zapadalova, but the Indiana tandem grabbed the 'W.' They defeated Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu, 9-8 (5).
Four different Hoosiers pulled off the daily sweep, winning both their singles and doubles matches. Heller, Martin and Zapadalova were straight-set winners while Sopel came out on top with a 6-2 third-set victory over Jennifer Stone (Kentucky). Maria Guerreiro was also victorious in her singles contest, rolling to a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set win over Western Michigan's Emily Dudzik.
