Oct. 21, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana University women's tennis had another solid day of singles play on Day Three of the June Stewart Invitational at Vanderbilt University, winning six of nine matches. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers were 2-3 in doubles action.
"Overall, we did some better things today than we did in the first two days of the tournament," said Head Coach Lin Loring.
Freshman Maria Guerreiro and Junior Stephanie Heller each won their singles match on Sunday, going 3-0 for the weekend. Heller improved to 8-1 on the year and Guerreiro jumps to 7-2 in 2007-08. Guerreiro took a 6-4, 6-2 win over Vanderbilt's Liberty Sveke while Heller topped Ernestine Koornhof of Tennessee-Martin, 6-3, 6-2. Other Hoosiers earning singles wins on Sunday included:
Charlotte Martin def. Elizma Schoonees (UTM), 6-2, 6-2
Senior Brianna Williams and Freshman Myriam Sopel also combined to down a Tennessee-Martin opponent, beating Martie Wahl and Mary Beth Gunn by a score of 8-3. Heller and Martin teamed up to pound Andrea Herrera and Shannon Hartmann from Middle Tennessee State, 8-1.
"The tournament was really valuable for us because we tried eight or nine different doubles combinations," said Loring. "That's going to be a really big help as we finish the fall schedule and get ready for the dual match season beginning in January."
The Hoosiers will complete their fall schedule by competing in the Western Michigan Duals in two weeks, beginning on Friday, Oct. 2.
