Oct. 24, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Three Hoosiers advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Regional in Cincinnati, Ohio, each winning their Saturday morning matches before bowing out in the afternoon session. Leslie Hureau, Myriam Sopel and Evgeniya Vertesheva each won two contests to make it that far in the 64-player bracket.
"Our three players in the final 16 played very well today," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Those three players really played some good tennis today."
Vertesheva defeated a very solid adversary in her second round match, topping Tennessee's Rosala Alda. Alda defeated the No. 13 seed in the opening round, but fell to Vertesheva in three sets, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-0.
"Geniya had a great win in the morning over a Tennessee player we have never beaten before," said Loring.
Sopel also took out a UT Volunteer in her Saturday morning match, picking up a straight-set victory over Zsofia Zubor, 6-2, 6-4.
"Myriam's win over Tennessee and her three-set loss to Vanderbilt might have been the best tennis she has played in her career," said Loring.
Hureau had the easiest time getting her second-round winner, dropping just two games (6-0, 6-2).
"Leslie played near perfect tennis in her morning match and actually played very well against the No. 2 seed in the afternoon, although the score does not indicate that," said Loring.
