Hureau Takes Another Singles Flight
Oct. 24, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Indiana University women's tennis team wrapped up their second competition of the 2010-11 season on Sunday, finishing the third and final day of the KU Invitational with an overall singles record of 12-6 and 10-2 doubles mark.
"The highlights of this trip have to be Leslie (Hureau) in the singles and Geniya (Vertesheva) and Kayla (Fujimoto) in the doubles," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Leslie is still undefeated this fall, winning her second tournament. She beat a very, very good player today from Armstrong Atlantic. I think Leslie played her best tennis since coming to IU."
Sophomore Leslie Hureau, ranked 93rd nationally, remains unbeaten on the season with a singles record of 6-0. After opening the year with a flight title at the Hoosier Classic, she followed that up with another top singles fight title at the KU Invitational. Hureau bested her opponent in a three-set championship match (6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
Evgeniya Vertesheva also matched her singles results from the Hoosier Classic, winning two of three matches and taking third place in the top singles flight in both tournaments. Sophie Garre and Charlotte Martin were victors in two of three singles matches as well on the weekend.
In doubles action, Vertesheva and freshman Kayla Fujimoto had an unscathed weekend with their 4-0 doubles record. Indiana's remaining two doubles duos also performed well. The tandems of Hureau/Garre and Martin/Myriam Sopel each took three of four doubles contests.
"We wanted to try some different doubles combinations this tournament, but because of injuries to Katya and Myriam we had to keep Geniya and Kayla together and they just keep winning," said Coach Loring. "It's a combination we know will work next semester if we decide to use it."
The Cream and Crimson now will now take a two-week break from competition and prepare for the Western Michigan Super Challenge from Nov. 5-7 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
