Hoosiers Are Perfect in Singles Play in Day One of Georgia Invitational
Jan. 14, 2011
ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 45 Indiana women's tennis team opened the spring season on Friday in the Georgia Invitational with a perfect 7-0 mark in singles play. Overall for the day, the Hoosiers finished with a record of 10-4 (7-0 singles, 3-4 doubles).
Indiana battled Troy in singles play to begin the day. No. 91 Leslie Hureau, Evgeniya Vertesheva, Katya Zapadalova and Diani Kyllmann all won their matches in straight sets. Charlotte Martin, Kayla Fujimoto and Sophie Garre each dropped their opening set, but rebounded strong to win their matches in just giving up a combined seven games in their final two sets.
In doubles action, the Hoosiers won all three of their matches over Troy duos, but dropped four matches to members of the No. 15 Georgia Bulldogs.
"Overall, I thought we did a very good job today," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "With dead week, finals and winter break, we have been off almost six weeks. Then we had only three days of practice before we flew down here. Considering those things, we hit the ball pretty solid. Even against Georgia, who will be a top five team, I though we did some good things."
Indiana will return to the court for day two of the Invitational on Saturday morning. The Hoosiers are scheduled to face Kansas State in doubles play, and then Georgia in singles play to finish the day.
