Hureau Takes 2010 NCAA Singles Champ to Wire in Day Two of Georgia Invitational
Jan. 15, 2011
ATHENS, Ga. - Indiana played a round of doubles against Kansas State and then battled No. 15 Georgia in singles play in day two of the Georgia Invitational on Saturday. The No. 45 Hoosiers picked up three doubles match wins against KSU, but were swept in singles action by the Bulldogs.
Against Kansas State, Indiana's duos of Diana Kyllmann and Charlotte Martin, Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva and Sophie Garre and Myriam Sopel all picked up wins in doubles play. Leslie Hureau and Katya Zapadalova were the only Hoosiers that faltered against the Wildcats.
Georgia showed its strength against the Hoosiers as the Bulldogs earned wins in each of the seven singles matches played against IU. However, No. 91 Hureau was the story of the day for Indiana as the sophomore took last year's NCAA singles champion, UGA's Chelsey Gullickson, to a third set before falling just short, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
"The highlight today was Leslie's match against Gullickson, last year's NCAA singles champion," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "She was literally two points away from winning the match. Hopefully this match will give her the confidence to know she can play with anyone in the country."
The final day of the Georgia Invitational will take place on Sunday. The Hoosiers will face-off against Kansas State in singles action to wrap up the weekend.
