Bloomington, Ind. The Indiana womens tennis team began its spring dual match season on Sunday with victories over Western Michigan and Miami (Ohio).
The Hoosiers (2-0 overall) opened the day with a 6-1 victory over WMU. The Hoosiers won five of its six singles and two of the three doubles. Laura McGaffigan and Cecile Perton both had especially tough matches. McGaffigan dropped the first set but was able to come back and win the second set and tiebreaker to capture the win. Perton won the first set then dropped the second, forcing a tiebreaker where she was able to fight out a close win.
Indiana later faced Miami (Ohio), sweeping the doubles and singles for a 7-0 victory.
Indiana head coach Lin Loring was pleased with the way the Hoosiers began the season.
It was a good start to the season. All eight girls got to play, and we won both matches, Loring said. Western was an especially tough match because although we were favored, they were good enough to beat us.
The Hoosiers return to the IU Tennis Center next Saturday, Jan 31, to face No. 10 Tennessee at 10 a.m.
