BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team will open the 2005 spring campaign on Saturday, Jan. 22, with matches against DePaul and Ball State: Here is a look at the Blue Demons and the Cardinals.

    Scouting The Opponents:
Ball State finished last season with an 11-9 overall record and a 5-4 ledger in the Mid-American Conference. BSU secured the No. 5 seed at the 2004 MAC Championship, but was upended by No. 4 Miami, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round.

This year's squad returns three letterwinners and welcomes four newcomers to the roster. Jenny Batty, sister of current Hoosier junior Sarah Batty, is the lone senior on the squad. She posted a 7-13 record in the No. 2 singles slot last spring. Batty teamed with Susan Kelley for an 11-9 mark at No. 2 doubles. Kelley closed the year with a 14-18 overall singles record and a 16-12 overall doubles mark. Junior Katie Owens finished 2004 with a 16-17 singles ledger, splitting time in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles slots.

Kathy Bull is in her 17th year at the helm of the Cardinals.

DePaul was 18-8 overall in 2004 and finished with a perfect 6-0 slate in Conference USA. The Blue Demons opened their 2005 spring campaign with a 5-2 loss at No. 20 Michigan on Jan. 16. DePaul will play at No. 5 Northwestern on Jan. 19 before traveling to Bloomington.

Sophomore Gergana Ganeva was named 2004 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the all-conference first team. Senior Marina Parashkevova was selected to the third team. Parashkevova and sophomore Petra Rehusova form the top doubles tandem for DePaul.

The Hoosiers defeated Ball State (7-0) and DePaul (6-1) last season in Bloomington on Mar. 6, 2004.
