BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis team plays its first matches on the road this weekend, taking on Kansas (9 a.m.) and Drake (3 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 20. Both matches will be played in Lawrence, Kansas.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana begins the year with a 2-0 record, defeating Miami (Ohio), 7-0, and Western Michigan, 5-2. Sophomore Alba Berdala went 2-0 playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, while sophomore Sigrid Fischer and senior Cecile Perton earned a 2-0 doubles record on the weekend.
No. 59 Kansas opens its spring season with the Hoosiers on Saturday. They are led by All-Big 12 performers Elizaveta Avdeeva and Ksenia Bukina.
Drake also has its first match on Saturday against Indiana.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN FIRST ITA POLL OF 2007
The Indiana Hoosiers are ranked at No. 43 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) FILA Collegiete Rankings of the season. The team ended last season ranked 44th in the poll. Indiana is one of five Big Ten teams ranked in the poll, led by No. 9 Northwestern.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Sophomore Alba Berdala is ranked at No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It is the first time in her career that she has been ranked. Berdala is 8-5 on the year and 2-0 in the dual-match season.
LORING ENTERS 30TH SEASON AS HOOSIER COACH
Head coach Lin Loring, who leads the NCAA in women's tennis victories, is in his 30th season at IU. He is one of just six coaches who have coached at Indiana for 30 years or more. The other five are Sam Bell (track, 30 years), Jerry Yeagley (men's soccer, 31 years), Hobie Billingsley (diving, 31 years), James `Doc' Counsilman (swimming, 33 years), and Bob Fitch (men's golf, 33 years).

Seniors Cecile Perton and Laura McGaffigan are serving as team captains for the 2006-07 campaign.
