    Hoosiers Begin Dual Season Against Western Michigan, Miami

    On Tap...The Hoosiers will open their dual match season this weekend, as they host Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio on Saturday. The match against Western Michigan will begin at 9:30 a.m. and they will return to action that afternoon at 2:30 p.m to face Miami of Ohio. "They are probably the two top teams in the MAC Conference. Western Michigan won the match last year (over Miami of Ohio) and went to the NCAA tournament. They trade off almost every year with Miami, so this will be a good early season test to see exactly where we stand before we fly down to Atlanta (to play Georgia Tech and Georgia State)," said coach Lin Loring.

    Series Against Western Michigan...The Hoosiers come into this match against Western Michigan with an overall record of 16-0. Last year, the Hoosiers defeated the Broncos 5-2 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

    Series Against Miami of Ohio...The Hoosiers have faced Miami of Ohio 19 times during Lin Loring's years at Indiana and hold a 19-0 record against the Red Hawks. In last year's match in Bloomington the Hoosiers won 6-1.

    In The Rankings...The women's tennis team comes into the season as the 55th ranked team nationally and 7th in the Midwest Region...Senior Jessica Anderson and Junior Kelly Blanch begin the season the season nationally ranked in doubles at #42. They are also ranked 8th in the region...Senior Zahra Ahamed and Freshman Karie Schlukebir are ranked 13th in the region...Anderson and Blanch are both ranked in the Midwest Region in singles. Anderson at #8 and Blanch at #20.

    Adding Two New Players...Indiana begins the dual season with two new players on their roster. Freshmen Nicki Barnet of Australia and Irina Kharun of the Ukraine joined the team at the semester.

    Recapping The Fall...The Hoosiers completed the fall season at the ITA Midwest Region Championships from November 3-8. The Hoosiers sent four players for the Qualifying Singles Round and two doubles teams. Amanda Field and J.J. Levin qualified in singles, while Field/Levin and Ahamed/Schlukebir both qualified in doubles. Jessica Anderson and Kelly Blanch reached the semifinals in doubles, while Ahamed and Schlukebir reached the quarterfinals. In singles, Anderson and Ahamed each reached the third round. In other fall tournaments, the Hoosiers competed in the Georgia Tech Invitational from October 22-24. In Flight A singles, Anderson took 4th place, while Blanch won the back draw to finish in 9th-place. In Flight D, Schlukebir lost in the finals match to finish in 2nd-place. Jennifer Hsia won the back draw of Flight C (9th-place), while J.J. Levin finished in 8th-place in Flight B. In doubles, Anderson/Blanch (Flight A) and Ahamed/Schlukebir (Flight B) each won the back of their Flights to finish in 9th-place. They hosted the Indiana Fall Invitational (September 24-26) and the Hoosier Fall Classic (October 14-16). Anderson and junior Blanch both won their flights at the Indiana Fall Invitational and reaching the finals against each other at the Hoosier Classic. They also won the doubles flight at the Hoosier Classic going 4-0. At the Indiana Fall Invitational, Hsia (Flight 5) and Schlukebir (Flight 8) won their respective flights. Senior Becky Wallihan won Round Robin B at the Hoosier Classic. Levin has made an impressive debut going 4-2 in singles and doubles. Sophomore Amanda Field returned to the lineup at the Hoosier Classic and went 2-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles.

    Coach Lin Loring...is currently in his 22nd season as the Head Coach of the Hoosiers women's tennis team. In his 22 season's he has compiled a remarkable overall record of 530-139, while accumulating a 257-25 record against Big Ten opponents. The four-time Big Ten Coach -of the-Year and two-time National Coach-of-the -Year, has compiled an 572-156 overall record in his 26 year coaching career. Prior to Indiana, coach Loring spent four-years as the Head Coach of UC-Santa Barbara.
