    Women's Tennis opens '98 season
    Western Michigan/Miami (Oh.) up first for Hoosiers

    THIS WEEK: The Indiana womenUs tennis team opens its dual match season with a pair of home matches against Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio on the 24th. The Hoosiers will square off against Western Michigan at 9:00 a.m. and Miami of Ohio at 2:30 p.m.

    HOOSIERS COMPLETE SUCCESSFUL FALL SEASON: Despite several injuries the Hoosiers managed to put together a strong tournament season last fall. Zahra Ahamed led the Hoosiers with a 9-2 singles mark and a 10-3 doubles record. Correne Stout also dominated her opponents, going a perfect 8-0 in solo matches while notching an 11-1 doubles mark.

    WELCOME ABOARD: Head Coach Lin Loring and his women's team welcomed its newest member recently, freshman Kelly Blanch. Blanch a December, 1997 graduate of Grafton High School in Grafton, New South Wales, Australia, joined the team at the start of 2nd semester. At Grafton she led her team to a 2nd place finish in the Australian All School Championships in December. Blanch was ranked 4th in Australia in Girls 16 Singles last year.

    LEADING BY EXAMPLE: This years squad is led by three seniors: Megan McCarney, Christy Sharp, and Correne Stout. McCarney tallied a 24-14 overall record last season playing at both #1 and #2 singles and racked up a 20-15 record in doubles. Stout compiled a 28-18 record playing mostly 1 and 2 singles while registering an 18-13 record in doubles. Sharp posted a 27-16 mark in singles last year while going 22-11 in doubles matches. All three seniors will be looked upon for leadership both on and off the court as they hope to lead the young Hoosiers to another Big Ten title.

    HOOSIERS NET CLASS OF 2002: Coach Loring recently announced the signing of two tennis recruits who will comprise the class of 2002, Amanda Field and Karie Schlukebir. Field is a senior at Eastside High School in Gainesville, Florida. She is ranked 60th nationally in Girls 18's and led her school to the 4A State Championships as a junior. Schlukebir is finishing her final year at Mattawan High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is ranked 66th nationally and was the captain of the victorious Western Michigan Junior Wightman Cup Team last year. Schlukebir helped lead her high school to the Michigan Class B Championship as a sophomore.

    HEAD COACH LIN LORING: Loring is entering his 21st season at the helm of the Hoosiers tennis program. In his 20 seasons he has compiled an impressive 494-119 overall record while amassing a 238-20 mark against Big Ten foes. The four time Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year and two time National Coach of-the-Year has 536 victories against 136 defeats in his 24 year career. Prior to Indiana, Loring coached for four seasons at his alma mater, UC-Santa Barbara.

    THE NUMBERS GAME: In the recent Rolex Collegiate Rankings, the Hoosiers were ranked 35th in the nation and 7th in the Midwest Region. Megan McCarney and Jessica Anderson received individual recognition as they were ranked 28th and 29th respectively in singles. One of IndianaUs opponents this weekend, Western Michigan, was ranked 12th in the region. Their doubles team of Hiedi Cakans and Kristen DuVall were ranked 13th regionally while Cakens received a #24 singles rank. Natalia Soetrisno and Alice Rangsithienchai of Miami of Ohio were wanked 6th and 13th respectively in the regional rankings.

    ON THE HORIZON: The Hoosiers travel to Blacksburg, Virginia for the annual Virgina Tech Invite January 30th - February 1st. Along with Indiana and the host school, South Carolina, and Pennyslvania University will be competing in the tournament.
