    Open Spring with Two Wins

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 29 Indiana women's tennis team opened the 2005 spring campaign with a pair of victories over DePaul and Ball State by identical scores of 6-1 on Saturday at the IU Varsity Tennis Center. With the win over DePaul, Head Coach Lin Loring is now 28-0 all-time in spring openers.

    Against the Blue Demons, IU claimed the doubles point winning two of the three duo matches. At No. 2, sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams bested sophomore Gergana Ganeva and junior Brenda Leung, 8-4. Sophomores Cecile Perton and Kara Zeder downed freshmen Bojana Murisic and Anja Mihaldinec, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.

    Williams closed out the first singles match of the morning, 6-3, 6-1, over Lueng at No. 4 to give IU a 2-0 advantage.

    Vastag, the 90th-ranked player in the country, won a tough three-set match, 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (6), over Parashkevova at the No. 1 position. In the match tiebreaker, the players traded points to a 6-6 score, but the Okemos, Mich., product captured the final four points to garner the win.

    In another match that came down to the tiebreaker, Batty won at No. 2, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (5), over Csordas to seal the victory for IU. McGaffigan won another nail-biter for the Cream and Crimson, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6), against Gergana at the No. 4 position.

    Perton won at position No. 6, downing Mihaldinec (6-2, 6-1).

    Against Ball State, the Hoosiers captured all three doubles matches. McGaffigan and Walterova earned an 8-0 win over freshmen Stephanie Farrar and Jennifer Pollack at the No. 2 spot.

    Vastag and Batty won at No. 1, 8-2, over senior Jenny Batty, sister of IU junior Sarah Batty, and sophomore Jessica Thompson. Williams and Zeder teamed at No. 3 for an 8-3 win over freshmen Haly Calderwood and Allison Thompson.

    In singles action, Vastag bested Batty at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1), while Batty downed Jessica Thompson (6-2, 6-1) and McGaffigan beat Pollack (6-1, 6-2) at No. 2 and 3, respectively. Williams was victorious at the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-0, against Calderwood.

    Walterova got the best of Owens (6-4, 6-0) at the No. 5 singles slot.

    The Hoosiers will return to the court next weekend for a pair of matches in North Carolina. IU will face No. 8 Duke on Jan. 29 (noon) and No. 15 North Carolina on Jan. 30 (1 p.m.).
