Hoosiers Win Opening Match of 2011 over Western Michigan
Jan. 22, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 45 Indiana women's tennis team picked up a win in its first dual match of the 2011 spring season. The Hoosiers (1-0) defeated Western Michigan (0-1) on Saturday, 6-1.
The Hoosiers started the day playing it very close in doubles competition. Leslie Hureau and Katya Zapadalova won in convincing fashion, 8-3, to begin doubles action. Western Michigan evened things out as the Bronco duo of Maggie Remynse and Miloslava Shustova defeated IU's Charlotte Martin and Myriam Sopel, 8-5, in No. 3 doubles. Evgeniya Vertesheva and Kayla Fujimoto would eventually win the doubles point for the Hoosiers in a close one playing No. 2, 9-8.
In singles play, every match was decided in straight sets. Vertesheva set the tone early for the Hoosiers cruising to a 6-0, 6-4 triumph as the No. 2 singles player. Fujimoto fell just short in No. 5 singles play before Zapadalova picked up IU's second singles win of the day at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3. Sopel clinched the team win for IU with her dominating win in No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Martin kept the moment going capturing a win while playing No. 4.
No. 91 Hureau was the No. 1 singles player for the Hoosiers and handled Maggie Remynse of Western Michigan, 7-6, 6-4. The win improved Hureau's season record to 12-1 on the year.
"I thought we played really tight in the doubles, but found a way to win," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "Western Michigan always has very well coached doubles. Then in singles, we loosened up, got up early and never let them in the match. I thought we played much better in singles than we did in doubles."
Indiana will not have long to savor the victory, as IU returns to the court for a pair of matches on Sunday against Xavier and Ball State. Play begins at the IU Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. against the Muskateers in the first match of the day.
