Bloomington, Ind. The Indiana womens tennis team upset No. 10 Tennessee in a hard-fought 4-3 victory. The Hoosiers improved to 3-0, while Tennessee opens the season 0-1.
Indiana head coach Lin Loring was extremely pleased with the teams performance today.
This is a huge win for our program, Loring said. After five years of really bad luck with injuries, were back! It was a great team win, and we were in every match. Even the matches we lost, we had chances to win.
The Hoosiers began the morning dropping doubles 2-1. The only tandem to win in doubles was No. 24 Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran, 8-1, over No. 50 Encina and Immink. The two other doubles matches were battles which Tennessee came away victorious as Maharaj and Robards defeated No. 50 Martina Grimm and Sarah Batty, 9-7 and Schaub and Kray defeated Dora Vastag and Laura McGaffigan, 8-6.
The Hoosiers came back strong in singles, winning four of six to capture the upset. Indiana forced three of its singles matches into a third set, winning two of them. The deciding match was Battys 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over No. 97 Ashley Robards. Vastag, McGaffigan and Schlukebir captured the other three points for the Hoosiers.
Our players need to know that we now have a big red target on our back, Loring said. Hopefully well be up for the challenge.
The Hoosiers will get to see if they are up for that challenge when they head to Tempe, Ariz. to play the University of the Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 31st at 11 a.m. and No. 19 Arizona State on Sunday, Feb. 1st at 11 a.m.
