Lady Hoosiers Topple Western Michigan/Miami of Ohio

Bloomington, IN--Indiana's women's tennis team opened its dual match season with a pair of victories on Saturday as they easily defeated two regional opponents. The Hoosiers blanked both Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio, winning 17 of a possible 18 matches to open the season a perfect 2-0.

In the early contest, Indiana took all but the number one doubles match from Western Michigan. Megan McCarney dominated her first match of the season at number one singles, easily defeating Heidi Cakans 6-0,6-1. The lone setback for the Hoosiers occured when McCarney and Zahra Ahamed dropped a hard fought 9-7 decision to Cakans and Kristen DeVall at number one doubles. Because of the Big Ten doubles rule, however, which states that the team taking 2 of the 3 doubles matches gets the doubles point, the Hoosiers won the match easily, 7-0.

Against Miami of Ohio the Hoosiers found much of the same success, taking all nine matches. Indiana's doubles teams came up big, winning by a combined score of 24-6, to help carry the Hoosiers. Kelly Blanch, who has been with the team for just over a week, played extremely well in her second ever collegiate match, defeating Brooke Nelson, 6-1,6-0, at number 4 singles.

"Overall we played well," said head women's coach Lin Loring. "If we can show improvement next week at Virginia Tech, we'll be ready for Clemson in two weeks. That's our first big match of the season."

Indiana will take the week to practice before heading to Blacksburg, Virginia to compete in the Virginia Tech Invite. Along with the Hoosiers and the host school, Pennyslvania and South Carolina will compete in the four team tournament.
