Bloomington, Ind. - A solid showing in doubles play lifted the Indiana women's tennis team to a pair of victories over Western Michigan and Miami (Ohio) at the IU Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Hoosiers (2-0 overall) opened the day with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over WMU in which the two teams split the six singles matches, with each team winning three. The Hoosiers won the doubles point to get things started, and that proved to be the difference. The key win in doubles came at the number one position, where Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran teamed to claim an 8-4 win over Frederika Girsang and Melanie Peters.
"We knew it was going to be tough," Tran said. "We had a good match against them in the fall. We hung with them early in the match, but they played really well. We were smart enough to just let this one come to us instead of forcing it."
Indiana's match against Miami (Ohio) later in the day was not nearly as hard-fought, as the Hoosiers cruised to a 6-0 sweep of the Redhawks. The lone point that was not decided came at the number six singles spot, where Indiana's Jessica Groth and Miami's Ilze Meyer mutually agreed to retire the match after the team result had already been decided.
"We probably have only two matches the rest of the year where we will be the favored team, so getting these two wins was really big," Indiana Head Coach Lin Loring said. "The Western Michigan match was especially gratifying because we had to win all the close matches for a 4-3 victory. That match could have easily gone the other way."
The Hoosiers return to action next Saturday, when they battle fourth-ranked Duke at 10 a.m. in Durham, North Carolina.
