Scouting Duke & North Carolina
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team will travel to North Carolina this weekend to face No. 8 Duke and No. 15 North Carolina. Here is a look at the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels:
Scouting The Opponents:
No. 8 Duke returns five letterwinners from last season and welcomes two transfers to this year's squad. The 2004 team finished the season with a 22-5 record, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament Round of Eight.
The Blue Devils opened their 2005 spring season with a 4-3 victory at home over No. 18 Tennessee on Jan. 22. Duke won the doubles points and picked up singles victories at positions No. 2, 5 and 6.
In the latest ITA national singles rankings (Jan. 11), four players stand among the nations best. Junior Jackie Carleton, a transfer from UCLA, is 56th, senior Saras Arasu rests in 96th, sophomore Jennifer Zika and senior Katie Blaszak each were listed at 108th and 115th respectively.
Jamie Ashworth is in his ninth season as the head coach of Duke.
No. 15 North Carolina is 3-0 on the season after posting a 5-2 win at home against No. 18 Tennessee on Jan. 22. The Tar Heels also garnered wins against Davidson (6-1) and UNC Greensboro (7-0) on Jan. 15 to open the spring campaign.
UNC finished last season with a 20-9 record and return five regular starters this season. In the individual ITA rankings, seniors Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline were ranked in both singles and doubles. In singles, Mojzis is 26th and Cline is 37th. In the doubles polls, the pair is listed at 14th.
