BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team takes on DePaul and Bulter on Jan. 27 at the IU Tennis Center. The Hoosiers play DePaul at 10 a.m. before battling Butler at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana remains undefeated with a 4-0 record after defeating No. 59 Kansas (6-1) and Drake (6-1). Leading the Hoosiers was sophomore Alba Berdala, who won both of her matches at No. 1 singles. She defeated Elizaveta Avdeeva of Kansas 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, and Zi Wang of Drake 6-1, 6-0 on the day. Others who went 2-0 on the day were sophomore Sigrid Fischer at No. 3 singles and Cecile Perton at No. 5.
In doubles, the team of Fischer and Perton remained undefeated on the year at No. 2. The duo defeated Lauren Hommell and Kunigunda Dorn of Kansas 8-2, and downed Eveline Rusdianto and Irina Kalashnikova of Drake in the afternoon.
DePaul opened the season with a win against Bowling Green State, 5-2, on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Blue Demons take on Northwestern on Wednesday, Jan. 24 before their meeting with the Hoosiers.
Butler opens its dual-meet portion of the season against Indiana. During the fall, Michelle Hawes led the team with a 4-3 record in singles play.
Senior Cecile Perton and sophomore Sigrid Fischer are each a perfect 4-0 in both singles and doubles play. Perton and Fischer have teamed up to go 4-0 at No. 2 doubles. Fischer is 4-0 at No. 3 singles, while Perton remains perfect at No. 5 singles.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN FIRST ITA POLL OF 2007
The Indiana Hoosiers are ranked No. 43 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season. The team ended last season ranked 44th in the poll. Indiana is one of five Big Ten teams ranked in the poll, led by No. 9 Northwestern.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Sophomore Alba Berdala is ranked No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It is the first time in her career that she has been ranked. Berdala is 10-5 on the year and 4-0 in the dual-match season.
LORING ENTERS 30TH SEASON AS HOOSIER COACH
Head coach Lin Loring, who leads the NCAA in women's tennis victories, is in his 30th season at IU. He is one of just six coaches who have coached at Indiana for 30 years or more. The other five are Sam Bell (track, 30 years, 1969-98), Jerry Yeagley (men's soccer, 31 years, 1973-2003), Hobie Billingsley (diving, 31 years, 1959-89), James `Doc' Counsilman (swimming, 33 years, 1957-90), and Bob Fitch (men's golf, 33 years, 1957-89).
