January 30, 1999Women's Tennis Defeats Miami (OH)
Bloomington, Ind.-In the first of two matches on the day, the women's tennis team defeated Miami (OH) 6-1. The Hoosiers playing at home for the first time in the young season, played strong in both singles and doubles to improve their record to 3-0.
The Hoosiers won five out of the six singles matches, with the only loss coming at the number one position. Kelly Blanch played well, taking Natalia Soetrisno to a second set tie-break, before losing to her 6-4,7-6(11). The Hoosiers dominated the rest of the singles matches, as they did not lose a set. Jessica Anderson defeated Ivona Grujic 6-2,6-4. Zahra Ahamed won over Elin Bengsston 6-2,6-2. Amanda Field defeated Caroline Stevens 6-2,6-0. Ana Ceretto and Karie Schlukebir finished off Miami, Ceretto defeating Kadija Richards 6-4,6-4 and Schlukebir knocking off Catherine Dilley 6-3,6-1.
Indiana fought back to win the lone doubles point, as Ahamed and Schlukebir won four out of the last five games in the deciding match to defeat Grujic and Richards 8-6. Other doubles action saw Anderson and Field continue their strong play, as they breezed past Bengsston and Adams 8-3, and Blanch and Becky Wallihan battled back before falling to Soetrisno and Stevens 8-5.
Coach Lin Loring said, "I thought that we played very well. The loss at one doubles was my fault, because we did not practice doubles this week, just singles. They made a lot of enforced errors. Kelly (Blanch) played well at (number) one singles, even though she lost."The Hoosiers will host Ball State this afternoon. Play will take place at the Indiana University Tennis Center starting at 2:30 P.M.
