DURHAM, N.C. -- The Indiana womens tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday when it fell to No. 4 Duke, 7-0, in Durham, N.C. An injury-depleted Indiana squad fell to 2-1 on the season while the Blue Devils improved to 4-0.
"Duke is probably the best team that we will face all year," head coach Lin Loring said. "It was a good learning experience for the girls that were able to play. Until we can put our six starters on the court, it will be hard to be competitive as a team."
To start the match, Duke captured the doubles point with a pair of wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Katie Granson and Julia Smith handed the Hoosiers Martina Grimm and Sarah Batty an 8-1 setback at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, Linda Tran and Dominika Walterova fell to the Blue Devils Julie DeRoo and Hillary Adams, 8-2. The Hoosiers only traveled five players due to injuries and were forced to forfeit the No. 3 singles spot.
Duke won all the singles matches at the top four spots as well to cruise to the 7-0 victory. Tran was defeated by second-ranked Kelly McCain at the No. 1 slot, 6-1, 6-1, while Batty at No. 2 dropped her match to No. 15 Amanda Johnson, 6-3, 6-3.
Indiana will continue its two-match road trip on Sunday against another opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hoosiers take on Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 9 a.m.
