Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana women's tennis standout Karie Schlukebir is out indefinitely, as the cancer that she has endured in the past has re-emerged.
Schlukebir will undergo a series of tests in the next few days that will provide more information about the cancer. Her return date is unclear and hinges on the results from these tests.
"The entire team's thoughts and prayers are with Karie," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "She is extremely strong, and we are confident she will come through these tests in a positive manner and be back soon."
Schlukebir had compiled a 7-3 overall singles record during the 2002-03 season, including a perfect 2-0 record in dual match play. She and her doubles partner Linda Tran had put together an 11-3 overall doubles record and were ranked as the No. 28 team in the nation.
The Kalamazoo, Mich., native has battled cancer earlier in her career, missing most of her freshman and sophomore seasons after melanoma was discovered.
