BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -The No. 27 Indiana women's tennis team earned a 6-1 win over No. 30 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon in the IU Varsity Tennis Center. The Hoosiers secured the doubles point and claimed singles victories from five players, including senior Dora Vastag and junior Sarah Batty triumphs over ranked foes.
"This was a great win for this team," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "People need to realize that we lost three senior starters from last year's Big Ten co-champion team. We have one senior and seven underclassmen. Hopefully, this will give us a confidence boost and show the players we can play at this level."
The Hoosiers won the first match of the doubles competition as the team of sophomore Cecile Perton and Vastag defeated freshman Jenna Loeb and sophomore Alex Hirsch by the margin of 8-6 at No. 3. The Demon Deacons evened the paired matches with a victory at No. 2. Senior Karin Coetzee and senior Danielle Schwartz bested sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams, 8-2.
The lone doubles point would come down to the final contest between Indiana's Batty and freshman Kara Zeder against Wake Forest's sophomore Ashlee Davis and senior Katie Martzolf. The contest was a nip-and-tuck battle, decided by a match tiebreaker. Wake claimed three of the first four points to take a 3-1 advantage in the breaker. The Hoosiers would battle back with three-straight points to lead 4-3. The two teams traded points to even the match at 6-6. Batty and Zeder notched the final two winners en route to the 8-6 tiebreaker win and a 9-8 conquest in the match to claim the doubles point for Indiana.
The Hoosiers claimed the initial three singles matches to secure the victory. Batty won the first match at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-1, over No. 77 Davis. Williams made the margin 3-0 with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Schwartz at the No. 4 slot.
Vastag, ranked No. 90 in the nation, bested No. 16 Coetzee, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at the top spot to clinch the victory for IU.
McGaffigan improved to 5-0 on the spring with a straight-set, 6-4, 7-6, win over Martzolf at the No. 3 position. Walterova picked up a singles win at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, over Loeb.
Perton was bested by Hirsch at No. 6, 3-6, 7-6, 10-6.
The Hoosiers will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 13, for a pair of matches at home. IU will host No. 19 Texas A&M at 10 a.m., and welcome Butler at 3 p.m.
