Hoosiers Pull Off Upset of 12th-Ranked Kentucky

Bloomington, Ind. The 36th-ranked Indiana womens tennis team pulled off its second upset of the season by knocking off 12th-ranked Kentucky in a hard-fought 5-2 victory. This marks the end to Indianas nine-match losing skid to the Wildcats, and the first victory since the 1992-93 season. The Hoosiers improve to 5-2 on the season, while Kentucky drops to 8-5.
Indiana head coach Lin Loring was extremely pleased with win and excited for the seniors.
This was a tremendous win for us, Loring said. It shows the win over Tennessee when they were ranked 10th was no fluke. Im really happy for our seniors. They have never beaten Kentucky. This win will be really important at NCAA selection time.
The Hoosiers began the morning dropping doubles, 2-1. The only tandem to win was Dora Vastag and Laura McGaffigan, 8-3, over Coventry and Winebrenner. The two other doubles matches were battles which Kentucky came away victorious as Foster and Schwenk defeated 24th-ranked Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran, 8-6 and Kalsarieva and Maurer defeated 50th-ranked Martina Grimm and Sarah Batty, 8-5.
The Hoosiers came back strong in singles, winning five of six to capture the upset. Indiana took an early 2-1 advantage as Tran and Vastag captured early wins. Tran defeated Foster 6-0, 6-2 and Vastag defeated 23rd-ranked Kalsarieva 6-2, 6-4. Kentucky was able to even the score at two-all as Maurer defeated McGaffigan, 6-3, 6-3. Perton put the Hoosiers back on top by downing Coventry 6-2, 7-5.
The final two matches were forced into a third set. After losing the first set 6-2, Batty won the second 6-3. She went on to win the third set 6-4 to clinch the win for the Hoosiers. Schlukebir, in the final match to finish, added the Hoosiers fifth win as she was able to down Sober, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.
The Hoosiers head back on the road to face Marquette on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m. and 26th-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 29 at 10 a.m.
