On Tap...The women's tennis team will begin the Big Ten season this weekend with home matches against Wisconsin and Iowa. The Hoosiers will face Wisconsin on Saturday at 10 a.m. Last year, the Hoosiers lost a close 4-3 match against Wisconsin, but the team holds a 29-7 all-time record against the Badgers. On Sunday, Indiana will face Iowa at 10 a.m. The Hoosiers lost a 4-3 match to the Hawkeyes, but hold a 22-2 all-time record against Iowa.
Scouting Wisconsin..The 50th-ranked Badgers come into the match with a 3-4 record. Wisconsin is currently on a four-match losing streak to ranked teams. Last weekend, it dropped matches to 3rd-ranked California 6-1, 5th-ranked Mississippi 6-2 and 34th-ranked New Mexico 6-2. Their top doubles team of Amy Gabler and Lara Vojnov knocked off the nation's top doubles team of Amy Jensen and Claire Curran of California. Coach Loring said, "Wisconsin is a very different team from last year's team that finished second in the Big Ten. They graduated their top two players and one girl transferred."
Scouting Iowa...The 30th-ranked Hawkeyes come into the weekend with a 2-4 record. Last weekend, they lost matches to 24th-ranked Fresno State 5-4 and 20th-ranked South Alabama 6-3. Iowa is led by Natalya Dawaf and the 21st-ranked doubles team of Shera Wiegler and Toni Neykova. Coach Loring said, "Iowa reached the round of 16 at the NCAA's last year. They have just about everybody back, so I expect this to be the best of the two matches."
Weekend Of Upsets...The Hoosiers finished last weekend with a pair of
upset wins at home. On Friday, Indiana dominated 44th-ranked Maryland 8-1.
Then the Hoosiers defeated 36th-ranked Marquette 8-1
In The Rankings...The women's tennis team remains the 55th ranked team nationally and 7th in the Midwest Region...Senior Jessica Anderson and Junior Kelly Blanch moved up 11 spots nationally to become the 31st ranked doubles team. They are also ranked 8th in the region...Blanch moved into the rankings in singles, entering at #93. Blanch is also ranked #20 in the Midwest Region, while Anderson is ranked 8th.
Milestones...In the match against Maryland, Jessica Anderson and Kelly Blanch each reached milestones. Anderson won her 80th career doubles match, while Blanch won her 50th career doubles match. Anderson is one win away from her 100th career singles victory. Zahra Ahamed reached 70 singles victories in her match against Georgia State and now is one win away from her 90th career doubles victory. Amanda Field and Becky Wallihan each won their 30th career singles match.
Rebounding With A Vengeance...After posting an 8-29 singles record last year, junior Kelly Blanch has bounced back to have an outstanding year so far. Blanch has gone 3-2 in dual matches this season and now is ranked 93rd in the recent ITA Rankings. She has an overall record of 12-3.
Fabulous Freshman...Jessica Levin has began her career at Indiana University with 5-0 dual record and a 13-7 overall record going into the weekend . Playing at the No. 5 singles position, she posted the Hoosiers only singles victory in a loss to Georgia Tech on February 6. Levin has also proved to be a solid doubles competitor by posting an overall 15-5 record.
Doubles Play...The Hoosiers three doubles teams have posted a 13-2 record in the four matches this season. The No. 1 team of Jessica Anderson and Kelly Blanch is 5-1. Jessica Levin and Becky Wallihan are 5-1 at No. 2 and Zahra Ahamed and Amanda Field are 3-0 at No. 3.
Coach Lin Loring...is currently in his 22nd season as the Head Coach of the Hoosiers women's tennis team. In his 22 season's he has compiled a remarkable overall record of 535-146, while accumulating a 258-30 record against Big Ten opponents. The four-time Big Ten Coach -of the-Year and two-time National Coach-of-the -Year, has compiled an 577-162 overall record in his 27 year coaching career. Prior to Indiana, coach Loring spent four-years as the Head Coach of UC-Santa Barbara.
ZAHRA AHAMED - is currently 3-2 in dual matches this season...won 70th career singles match against Erica Echko of Miami of Ohio on January 22...finished fall with a 3-3 singles record...went 2-1 at the ITA Midwest Region Championships.
JESSICA ANDERSON - is currently 5-1 in dual matches this season...has 99 career singles wins...won 90th career match against Katja Kuehner of Middle Tennessee State 6-2,7-5 on October 16, 1999...finished fall with a 9-3 record...went 2-1 at the ITA Midwest Region Championships...started tournament season with a seven match win streak.
NICKI BARNET - joined team in January...has posted a 1-0 record in dual singles match in an extra match.
KELLY BLANCH - is currently 3-1 in dual matches this season...finished fall with a 8-2 record...went 1-1 at the ITA Midwest Region Championships...started tournament season with a five match win streak.
AMANDA FIELD - is currently 5-1 in dual matches this season...won her 30th career match against Alexandra Stankovic of Marquette on February 20...finished fall with a 5-6 record...won three matches in the qualifying round at the ITA Midwest Region Championships, before losing in the main draw.
JENNIFER HSIA - finished fall with a 9-3 record...lost in opening round of qualifying at the ITA Midwest Championships, before winning her consolation match.
IRINA KHARUN - joined team in January...has not participated in any singles matches to date.
JESSICA LEVIN - is currently on a six-match winning streak to give her a 6-0 record in dual matches this season...finished fall with a 8-7 record...won three matches in the qualifying round at the ITA Midwest Region Championships, before losing in the second round of the main draw.
ANN POOSUTHASEE - is currently 2-0 in dual matches this season...finished fall with a 1-6 record.
BECKY WALLIHAN - is currently 2-1 in dual matches this season...won 30th career singles match against Christine DiMasi of Maquette on February 20...finished fall with a 5-1 record.
ANDERSON/BLANCH - are currently ranked 31st in the nation...have begun the dual season with a 5-1 record...finished fall with a 9-2 record...reached the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Region Championships (went 3-1 during the tournament).
LEVIN/WALLIHAN - are currently 5-1 in dual matches this season...did not play in tournament matches as a team.
AHAMED/FIELD - are currently 3-0 as a team in dual matches this season...did not play in tournament matches as a team.
