BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The Indiana women's tennis team opens its Big Ten portion of the schedule on Saturday, March 3, against Wisconsin at 10 a.m. The Hoosiers have also added a game to their schedule, and will play Indiana State on Sunday, March 4, at 10:30 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The No. 29 Hoosiers fell to No. 23 Tennessee, 7-0, on Saturday, Feb. 24. Four of the singles matches went into three sets, including four tiebreaker sets.
Wisconsin is 3-6 on the year. The team has lost six of its last seven matches. The Badgers' most recent win came against Marquette on Feb. 14, 4-3. Wisconsin fell 7-0 to Princeton its last time out, on Feb. 18. Caitlin Burke is ranked 14th in singles for the Badgers.
Indiana State is 5-4 on the year, and ranked at No. 75 on the year. The Sycamores have defeated No. 74 Western Michigan and No. 59 Iowa this season.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN ITA POLL
The Hoosiers are ranked 30th in the sixth ITA FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season, released Feb. 21. Indiana began the year ranked 43rd, and was ranked as high as No. 29 on Feb. 21. Indiana is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in the poll. Northwestern, ranked No. 5, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll.
HOOSIERS UPSET RANKED OPPONENTS
Senior Laura McGaffigan became the latest Hoosier to upset a ranked opponent with a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 60 Joelle Schwenk at No. 2 singles against Kentucky on Feb. 28.
During the fall season, sophomore Alba Berdala defeated No. 37 Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-3, at the Western Michigan Super Challenge on Nov. 11.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Sophomore Alba Berdala began the year ranked No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It was the first time in her career that she was ranked. Berdala is 8-4 in the dual-match season and 14-9 on the year in singles.
Senior Cecile Perton started the dual-match season with nine straight singles wins at No. 5. She is currently 10-2 in dual matches and 15-9 on the year. Perton competes with Sigrid Fischer at No. 2 doubles. The duo won its first eight matches of the spring campaign, and is currently 9-3. Fischer and Perton are 14-7 on the season.
