HOOSIERS FALL TO 3rd RANKED BLUE DEVILS

Durham, NC--Indiana's women's tennis team had to settle for a split this weekend, as they fell to 3rd ranked Duke today after defeating North Carolina on Saturday. The Hoosiers performed better in the loss, but still came up short, 7-2, and saw their record fall to 6-3 for the season.

The Hoosiers lone win in the singles came from freshman Kelly Blanch, who has played extremely well for the Hoosiers since joining the team in January. Playing at the number three position, Blanch defeated Karen Goldstein, 6-4,7-5 to improve her record to an impressive 11-1. Sophomore Jessica Anderson, playing at the number four position, dropped an extremely close, 7-5,7-5, decision to Kathy Sell.

In doubles, the Hoosiers were able to salvage a lone point, capturing the third position. Sophomore Becky Wallihan teamed up with junior Kelly Fitzgerald to defeat Kathy Sell and Brooke Siebel in a tightly contested 9-7 match. The win was the seventh straight for the tandem.

"Despite the loss we played a lot better today than we did in our win against North Carolina yesterday," said head tennis coach Lin Loring. "It was good to play Duke in an outdoor match because that gives us some outdoor experience."

Indiana is back in action this weekend as they open the Big Ten season at home. Minnesota comes calling on March 7th before the Hoosiers host Iowa on the 8th. They will then head to Nevada to face non-conference opponent UNLV on the 20th before resuming the conference schedule at 28th ranked Michigan on the March 28th.
