BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Senior womens tennis player Dora Vastag was named the Big Ten Womens Player of the Week, announced the conference office on Friday morning.
"This is a great honor for Dora and for the program," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "She played well last weekend and this is great recognition for her."
Vastag, ranked 84th in the nation, went 2-0 in singles and doubles action last weekend as the Hoosiers won both their matches on the weekend against Marquette and No. 44 Western Michigan.
Against the Golden Eagles, Vastag defeated Maria Calbeto, 6-0, 6-0, at the top singles spot. She also teamed with sophomore Celile Perton to claim an 8-2 victory over the Marquette duo of Calbeto and Andrea Bukacek. With each team winning a doubles match, the Okemos, Mich. native along with Perton, won the clinching contest against Western Michigan, defeating Carrie Jeanmaire and Reedhina Parekh, 8-5, to secure the doubles point for IU.
Vastag finished the day posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rattiya Hiranrat at the No. 1 singles position.
The Hoosiers will not return to the courts until Thursday, March 10, for a showdown with No. 17 TCU. The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m. and will be played in the IU Varsity Tennis Center.
