BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team will face players from Syracuse as it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Las Vegas Invitational, Sunday through Tuesday, March 11-13. The Hoosiers will also participate in an alumni fundraiser on Wednesday, March 14.
LAST TIME OUT
The No. 30 Hoosiers opened the Big Ten schedule on March 3 with a 7-0 win over Wisconsin. Indiana also downed No. 75 Indiana State, 5-2, on March 4.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN ITA POLL
The Hoosiers are ranked 41st in the seventh ITA FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season, released March 6. Indiana began the year ranked 43rd, and was ranked as high as No. 29 on Feb. 21. Indiana is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in the poll. Northwestern, ranked No. 5, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll.
HOOSIERS UPSET RANKED OPPONENTS
Senior Laura McGaffigan became the latest Hoosier to upset a ranked opponent with a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 60 Joelle Schwenk at No. 2 singles against Kentucky on Feb. 28.
During the fall season, sophomore Alba Berdala defeated No. 37 Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-3, at the Western Michigan Super Challenge on Nov. 11.
Indiana's biggest win as a team came against No. 21 Kentucky. With the Hoosiers ranked 29th, the team took the doubles point then won four of the six singles matches to clinch a 5-2 victory. McGaffigan, sophomore Sigrid Fischer, senior Cecile Perton and freshman Lindsey Stuckey all won in singles.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Sophomore Alba Berdala began the year ranked No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It was the first time in her career that she was ranked. Berdala is 9-5 in the dual-match season and 15-10 on the year in singles.
Senior Cecile Perton started the dual-match season with nine straight singles wins at No. 5. She is currently 12-2 in dual matches and 17-9 on the year. Perton competes with Sigrid Fischer at No. 2 doubles. The duo won its first eight matches of the spring campaign, and is currently 11-3. Fischer and Perton are 16-7 on the season.
For the first time since the 2002 season, Indiana started the year 8-0. The Hoosiers finished 2002 with a 17-10 overall record and a 6-6 Big Ten mark.
LORING ENTERS 30TH SEASON AS HOOSIER COACH
Head coach Lin Loring, who leads the NCAA in women's tennis victories, is in his 30th season at IU. He is one of just six coaches who have coached at Indiana for 30 years or more. The other five are Sam Bell (track, 30 years, 1969-98), Jerry Yeagley (men's soccer, 31 years, 1973-2003), Hobie Billingsley (diving, 31 years, 1959-89), James `Doc' Counsilman (swimming, 33 years, 1957-90), and Bob Fitch (men's golf, 33 years, 1957-89).
