Bloomington, IN - The women's tennis team improved its record to 10-2 with 7-0 victories over Ball State and Indiana State today in Bloomington. The Hoosiers lost only one doubles match on the day and won all twelve singles matches in straight sets.
The Hoosiers opened the day with the victory over Ball State. In doubles, the Hoosiers won all three matches. At No. 1, Jessica Anderson and Kelly Blanch defeated Libby Gerding and Darcy Poulos 8-3. Jessica Levin and Becky Wallihan won their match over Julie Beekman and Susie Miller 8-4 at the No. 2 position. Amanda Field and Jennifer Hsia, playing at the No. 3 position, defeated Shelly Brizendine and Gena Tranquada 8-1.
In singles, the Hoosiers did not drop a set. At No. 1, Anderson defeated Tranquada 6-3,6-1. Blanch, playing at the No. 2 position, won her match over Beekman 6-3,7-6. At No. 3, Levin shutout her opponent for the second straight match with a 6-0,6-0 victory over Poulos. At No. 4, Amanda Field posted a win over Susie Miller 6-2,6-0. Becky Wallihan, playing at No. 5, and Ann Poosuthasee, playing at No. 6, each won their match 6-0,6-0. Wallihan defeated Brizendine, while Poosuthasee defeated Alyce Zollman.
The Hoosiers then return to action in the afternoon with a victory over Indiana State. The Hoosiers started the match off by taking two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Anderson and Blanch defeated Sasha Exeter and Judy Liwanpo 8-1. Field and Hsia then clinched the doubles point with a win over Jennifer Earl and Karen Human 8-2 at No. 2. With the point already decided Nicki Barnet and Poosuthasee lost to Tina Morales and Lori Wilson 8-6 at No. 3.
In singles, the Hoosiers altered their lineup but produced the same result. Anderson, playing at No. 1, won her match over Morales 6-0,6-1. Levin, playing at No. 2, also had an easy time in a victory over Liwanpo 6-0,6-1. Poosuthasee clinched the victory for the Hoosiers with a win over Earl 6-1,6-1 at No. 4. Field, playing at the No. 3 position, was victorious over Human 6-3,6-2. At No. 5, Hsia won her match over Wilson 6-2,6-1. At No. 6, Barnet won her in her first career singles start by posting a victory over Exeter 6-1,6-2.
Head Coach Lin Loring said, "These were good matches for us, because we got to play everyone on our team. We took five days off during spring break, so this will help us get ready for the Big Ten season."
The Hoosiers will return to Big Ten play next weekend with a pair of road matches. On Saturday, the Hoosiers will face Northwestern at 11:00 a.m. in Evanston, Illinois. On Sunday, the Hoosiers will face Illinois in Champaign, Illinois at 11:00 a.m.
