Bloomington, Ind.- Junior Linda Tran was recognized as the Big Ten Player of the Week for her performance last weekend against Bowling Green and Cincinnati. It is the first Big Ten Player of the Week award ever given out. The previous seasons in women's tennis, the Big Ten has only given out Player-of-the-Month awards, but the conference switched to Player-of-the-week honors this season.
Tran won the award by leading the Hoosiers to wins over Bowling Green (6-1) and Cincinnati (4-3). Indiana was forced to play short handed due to injuries and had to forfeit the No. 6 singles spot and No. 3 doubles spot. In forfeiting the No. 3 doubles spot, the Hoosiers had to win both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to win the point. Tran did her part as she teamed with sophomore Dominika Walterova to win the No. 2 doubles position against both Bowling Green and Cincinnati. Walterova and Tran have had to team with one another due to injuries. The duo has won six straight matches after losing their first together as a team.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan native also picked up two wins at the No. 1 singles position. She swept through both her opponents in straight sets, while only losing five games in two matches. Tran's singles record currently sits at 9-11 this season.
Tran will lead the Hoosiers into action this weekend when they battle the Bulls of South Florida. The match will be Saturday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m.
