Women's Tennis On The Road For A Pair Of Big Ten Matches
ON TAP...The women's tennis team will be away from home for the
first time since the beginning of February this weekend. On Saturday, the
Hoosiers (10-2, 2-0) will be in Evanston, Illinois for a match against Northwestern
at 11 a.m. Last year, Indiana lost a 4-3 match to Northwestern in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers hold the all-time series lead at 27-9. On Sunday, the Hoosiers
will face Illinois in Champaign, Illinois at 11 a.m. Last year, Indiana
lost a 5-2 match to the Illini in Bloomington. The Hoosiers hold the all-time
series lead at 27-3.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN...The 14th-ranked Wildcats come into this weekend's
match with an 11-2 overall record, while going 2-0 in the Big Ten. Their
Big Ten victories came over Michigan State 7-0 and Michigan 5-2. Northwestern
is led by sophomore Lia Jackson, who is currently ranked 93rd in the nation.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS...The 67th-ranked Illini come into this weekend's
match with a 5-9 record, while going 2-0 record in the Big Ten. Their Big
Ten victories came over Michigan State 7-0 and Michigan 5-2. Last weekend,
Illinois lost two out of three matches in California with losses to USC
6-2 and UCLA 7-2, while defeating SMU 6-3. Illinois' top players are freshman
Eldina Fazlic and junior Simone Kung.
COACH LIN LORING ON THIS WEEKEND..."These will be the two best
Big Ten teams that we have played so far. Northwestern is ranked 14th in
the country and is the top team in the Big Ten. This will be a great test
for us. Illinois beat us last year. They have a couple really good international
new players on the team, so we do not expect. We are really look forward
to playing these two teams and they will be good matches."
HOOSIERS SWEEP HOME MATCHES...The women's tennis team swept the day
last Sunday with a pair of 7-0 wins over Ball State and Indiana State. The
Hoosiers won all 12 singles matches on the day and lost only one doubles
IN THE RANKINGS...The women's tennis team fall seven spots in the
rankings this week to 33rd...the Hoosiers are ranked 7th in the Midwest
Region...Senior Jessica Anderson and Junior Kelly Blanch are ranked 31st
nationally in doubles. They are also ranked 8th in the region...Blanch is
ranked #20 in the Midwest Region, while Anderson is ranked 8th.
AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS...Indiana has faced a ranked opponent in
seven matches this season and has posted a record of 5-2 with the losses
coming in close matches against #18 Tennessee and #49 Georgia Tech. They
have picked up wins over #32 Iowa, #44 Maryland, #36 Marquette, #49 Wisconsin
and #51 Purdue.
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS...Senior Jessica Anderson posted her 100th
career singles victory with a win over Wisconsin's April Gabler 6-4,6-7,6-1
on February 26. She currently has a 16-5 record on the season. Anderson
is currently 15th on the Hoosiers' all-time singles winning list with a
103 victories and one win away from tying Lizl Coetsee for 13th.
STRENGTH AT THE BOTTOM...Senior Becky Wallihan has always been a
solid doubles performer for the Hoosiers, but this year she also provided
great play at the No. 6 singles spot. After playing in only one singles
dual match a year ago, Wallihan has posted a 4-2 record this year.
REBOUNDING WITH A VENGENCE...After posting an 8-29 singles record
last year, junior Kelly Blanch has bounced back to have an outstanding year
so far. Blanch has gone 8-3 in dual matches this season and an overall record
FABULOUS FRESHMAN...Jessica Levin has began her career at Indiana
University with 11-1 dual record and a 19-8 overall record going into the
weekend. Levin has also proved to be a solid doubles competitor by posting
an overall 21-5 record.
STEADY IN THE LINEUP...Sophomore Amanda Field has provided a solid
performance at three different positions in the singles lineup. Currently,
she is playing at the No. 4 position and has posted a 2-1 record. She has
also seen time at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions and has an overall dual
record of 10-2.
DOUBLES PLAY...The Hoosiers' three doubles teams have posted a 28-4
record in the 12 matches this season. The No. 1 team of Jessica Anderson
and Kelly Blanch is 9-3. Jessica Levin and Becky Wallihan are 10-1 at No.
2. Amanda Field has gone 9-1 at No. 3, posting a 3-0 record with Zahra Ahamed
and a 6-1 record with Jennifer Hsia.
HEAD COACH LIN LORING...is currently in his 22nd season as the Head
Coach of the Hoosiers women's tennis team. In his 22 season's he has compiled
a remarkable overall record of 537-148, while accumulating a 260-30 record
against Big Ten opponents. The four-time Big Ten Coach -of the-Year and
two-time National Coach-of-the -Year, has compiled a 579-163 overall record
in his 27 year coaching career. Prior to Indiana, coach Loring spent four-years
as the Head Coach of UC-Santa Barbara.
